For the right person, this role can be based in Auckland or Wellington.


Your Role:

As a Graduate in the Operations Infrastructure Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills, working alongside talented and experienced professionals.


Reporting through to the Engineering Support Manager, you will rotate through a series of placements in the Engineering discipline teams for up to 2 years or until such time as KiwiRail identifies an appropriate permanent role within the Engineering department.


You will be directly supporting our strong and diverse multi-discipline rail Engineering (rail-track, civil, structures, traction electrical, signals, control systems) to deliver professional services to a vast portfolio of rail infrastructure renewal and upgrade projects.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Carry out projects and activities as assigned during rotational placements

  • Proactively develop technical and personal skills

  • Receive on the job experience across KiwiRail engineering disciplines and core functions

  • Produce and amend technical and business reports and documentation

  • Produce and amend CAD drawings

  • Assist with planning and scheduling of work


Your Skills:

We are looking for a Graduate with knowledge gained from their study in Networking and Communications or Data Communications Networks with a solid understanding of the fundamentals, an appreciation of basic networking protocols such as TCP, UDP, IP, and a willingness to learn more.


You will have the ability to speak in layman’s language about technical issues and clearly articulate problems to upset customers. Additionally, an aptitude for IT and/or analytics would be key to your success.


  • Degree or Diploma in a relevant Engineering or IT discipline

  • Have recently graduated (within the last two years)

  • Experience in a customer-facing role is advantageous, we need you to hit the ground running

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships quickly and effectively

  • A curious, proactive, and innovative mindset

  • Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Resident


We are looking for someone who can start ASAP – so you must have already graduated to be eligible for this position.
