Freight Operations Jobs

Freight Operations

We play a part in the overall transport network across KiwiRail and our part to play in that involves many other parts of the business. We work with the rest of the organisation to make KiwiRail a success across New Zealand.

KiwiRail plays an integral role in the New Zealand economy:

Our vision is to be safe, reliable and customer centric. The safety of our employees is paramount – a safe working environment is a productive one.

Connecting communities

The Upper North Island team are responsible for handling and transporting over 55% of total rail freight in New Zealand. The Upper North Island is “The Golden Triangle” and is where significant growth opportunities exist for KiwiRail, our communities and New Zealand.

We connect New Zealand and our communities. To meet the demands of this responsibility we constantly engage with our frontline people to live our values of “Care and Protect”, “One Winning Team”, “Straight and True” and delivering a “Great Customer Experience”.

Innovative solutions

Developing innovative solutions for customers is key to meeting demand. A great example is the approach we have taken with Fonterra to enable the easy and efficient transportation of its products to 20 world markets.

We operate dedicated rail services to and from dairy plants and invest in upgrades and new rail infrastructure along key routes, for example, the siding at Pahiatua which can accommodate up to 2.5 million litres of milk per day.

Import/Export growth

In recent years, we have seen strong growth in the Import/Export sector and from our Port partnerships. This is purely through our ability to aggregate and move large volumes of freight reliably and at speed.

To support the growth of New Zealand businesses, we have collaborated with our Port partners to service intermodal hubs across New Zealand, bringing significant benefits to the country and helping KiwiRail contribute to business growth.

Intermodal freight hubs, which enable freight to be collected and stored in large quantities before being transported to ships, are also changing the flow of global freight volumes and have become a vital logistical component for New Zealand's ports following the introduction of 'big ships' to New Zealand.
