Learning and Development

Learning and Development play a critical role in supporting our people as they navigate through their career.

We partner with the business to understand their learning needs, recruitment strategies and workforce planning criteria to ensure that we are able to provide the best training programmes to support this. We also design, review and develop most of our content in-house with a high performing team who aim to produce cutting edge packages.

As KiwiRail is the only rail company in Aotearoa, all our Licence To Operate training needs to be delivered by a team of rail experienced facilitators. With our centralised team, we support every pocket of our business. Scroll down to read more about a few of the initiatives we lead.

Our initiatives

Career progression

KiwiRail have developed detailed Career Progression Plans (CPP) for most operational areas. These plans outline specific skills required at each level within a particular department to ensure our people understand what is needed to progress to the next level within their team.  KiwiRail, along with our Union, support the growth of our workers and believe the CPP creates a clear pathway to grow within our business.

Virtual reality

KiwiRail is currently developing Virtual Reality technology into some areas of our technical training. Our trainee Locomotive Engineers, Rail Operators and Servicing Assistants will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a virtual rail environment to trial shunting duties, operating a locomotive and soak up the digital scenery in addition to the learning that they will complete in a real hands-on operating environment.

Mentoring

Mentoring at KiwiRail is a crucial element to ensuring the future of rail remains strong. Our mentoring programme allows you to connect with senior leaders within the business, soak up their jewels of knowledge and shave years off your learning curve. We have so many knowledgeable and experienced leaders in our business who enjoy passing on their tips and tricks to you.

Social Outcomes

KiwiRail are passionate about giving back and providing opportunities to those in need. We support a range of social outcome initiatives such as our partnership with the Ministry of Social Development to offer employment experience to job seekers, supporting prisoners through a release-to-work programme, organising catering through Eat My Lunch and venue bookings with organisations like the Salvation Army or the Ronald McDonald House.

Development

We are committed to investing in our people. KiwiRail have a range of development opportunities from frontline to executive level. Learning and Development lead enterprise wide leadership programmes, design and facilitate bespoke packages for internal teams and partner with organisations to ensure that what we offer is applicable to the specific audience.

Qualifications

This year, KiwiRail has commenced a campaign called Trades on Track. This initiative is about rewarding our workers with a qualification that matches the skills and training they currently complete. This is an exciting space our business, we are looking forward to seeing it grow!
