Train Control

Our Train Control Business Unit is responsible for the safe movement of trains and people across our track network. They are an integral part of keeping KiwiRail moving and work to ensure our services run to schedule and operated in the safest manner possible. From our Freight & Commuter trains to our Track Workers carrying out maintenance to a local farmer moving stock across the tracks – every movement with our network will be controlled by our teams of Train Controllers, Network Access Controllers and Signal Box Controllers for example.

Our National Train Control Centre is currently based in Wellington which controls the entire country’s’ network, however The Control Systems Integration program has been established to manage KiwiRail’s investment in renewing and upgrading the national signalling and control systems and to establish dual train control centres in both Wellington and Auckland ensuring both major cities are working in a more resilient and collaborative way.
