As a KiwiRail apprentice, you'll work closely with experienced team members in the field, where prioritising safety is paramount. Every day you will apply the skills and knowledge you learn, gaining valuable practical experience. An experienced mentor will guide you throughout your apprenticeship, helping you develop into a skilled and qualified tradesperson.
Your apprenticeship includes both theory and practical components. While most of your training is on-the-job, some apprenticeships also incorporate off-job learning through night classes, block courses, or distance learning.

How Apprenticeships work
On enrolment there is a three-way agreement signed between KiwiRail, the apprentice and the qualification provider, this is usually an Industry Training Organisation, Institute of Technology or Polytechnic. All three parties have a responsibility to make sure the apprenticeship run successfully, and the qualification is achieved within the required timeframe.
There are also other key people who are involved in the successful running of the apprenticeship, their roles are explained in the graphic below.
How Qualifications work
Qualifications are made up of unit standards that have both theory and practical elements. Unit standards are like individual blocks of learning. Once they have been successfully assessed they will appear on your NZQA Record of Achievement.
Once all unit standards that make up the programme are complete, you will be awarded the qualification.
