What learning and development do I receive during the Graduate Programme?
When you join the graduate programme, we don’t expect you to know everything. The programme is an opportunity for you to continue learning and developing. Throughout the two-year programme, you will be given training to build your professional and technical skills through on-the-job training. You will have a lot of support in the form of your managers, your buddy, your team and Talent Development Partner.

Our Talent Development team will schedule regular graduate training and development days and arrange projects to complete, which are great way to spend time with other graduates around the country, so you are able to grow and develop along with your professional network.

What is the typical first week like when I start the Graduate Programme?
We aim to ensure a smooth and welcoming onboarding experience. When you start the Graduate Programme, you will be joined with the other graduates in that cohort, led by our Talent Development Partner for a full business two-week induction including meeting key managers and visiting KiwiRail sites across New Zealand.

Then you will start your first rotation in your assigned business unit from week three on the Programme.

How many rotations will I have on the Graduate Programme?
We recommend 4-6 rotations over the 2 year programme. Each individual and role can be different and there might be other opportunities at different times. We encourage our graduates to have an input in their rotation plan and take initiative so they experience and learn as much as they can.

Can I request to be rotated into a specific team?
You will be assigned to a business unit and are likely to be rotating around their teams. Rotations outside of your business unit are also common, especially if it adds value within your discipline or team.

What support is available during the Programme?
During the Programme, we offer comprehensive support to ensure your success. This includes mentorship, regular 1:1 meeting with your manager, buddy and Talent Development Partner to ensure progress throughout the programme. As well as ongoing training and development opportunities, monthly team catch-ups with fellow-graduates and regular performance reviews for constructive feedback.

Our dedicated Talent Development Partner will navigate your professional development, schedule regular training, access to resources and answer any questions you have along the way.

In addition to this, the cohort of graduates that you start with, as well as graduates from previous years, will be there with you for friendly support and advice.

Our programme sets graduates up for long-term career success – by the end of the programme you will have a good idea of where you want to go next, and you will have all the support you need to get there.

What happens after completing the Graduate Programme?
After successfully completing the Graduate Programme, you will have gained valuable skills and experience that positions you for continued success within KiwiRail. The next steps typically involve transitioning into a permanent role within a specific business unit, aligning with your career aspirations and the organisation's needs. The Talent Development Partner will support and guide you throughout the transitioning process. Additionally, KiwiRail will continue to provide you with ongoing learning and development opportunities, ensuring that your career path remains dynamic and aligned with your goals.
