What to expect as a KiwiRail grad

Induction

Upon starting in the Graduate Programme, you'll receive a full induction (business familiarisation), which will include spending time across different KiwiRail depots and exposure to many of our business units.

Rotations

You’ll spend time in different rotations, giving you solid exposure to our diverse organization. The rotation phases will include structured learning components and work outputs, consisting of a mix of both project and business as usual (BAU) work.

Training and events

Training and/or events will occur formally on a quarterly basis, and informally as required. This includes training that all graduates will participate in, and also tailored training specific to your own development needs and the needs of your Business Unit.

Performance reviews

Formal performance reviews will occur on a 6-monthly basis. These will be based on pre-determined criteria around your behaviour, how well you demonstrate our KiwiRail values, your achievement of KPIs and feedback from your stakeholders. We'll seek feedback from your Business Unit manager, rotation supervisors/managers. The satisfactory performance will result in you achieving pay increments.

Mentors and buddies

To support you along your Graduate journey you will be given a buddy and a mentor. It's important that we achieve the right "fit" and the support arrangement is working well, so we'll review the mentor and buddy relationship after 3 months.

Advice to graduates

If you want to join us, find out as much as you can about KiwiRail, the role on offer, opportunities for development, the values and the culture of the organisation. Make sure you ask questions about the things important to you!

Apprenticeship programme

Apprenticeships are a key part of the New Zealand rail industry.
They are a fantastic way to learn and develop skills on the job.

KiwiRail has some of the best trades people in the country to learn from, with many employees having more than 20, 30, 40 and even 50 years’ experience. These employees offer a wealth of knowledge and pass this on to the next generation of tradesmen and tradeswomen.

As an apprentice at KiwiRail we expect you to be a team player by listening, communicating clearly, getting involved, delivering results, considering others and prioritising safety.

Apprenticeships are made up of both theory and practical components, with most of your time spent on the job learning from experienced employees. They will support you throughout your learning journey and help you complete your NZQA qualification on time.

Apprenticeships are available in the following areas of KiwiRail,
however some are still being development and are not ready for enrolment:

Seek support and ask questions as help is always available.
Be open to learn, understand the requirements of your qualification and own it as the qualification is yours.
