In 2021, a major redevelopment of KiwiRail’s Hillside Workshops began. A significant investment has been allocated from Government, PGF and KiwiRail in order to build new facilities including Mechanical workshops, wagon assembly facility, staff facilities and KiwiRail network facilities. This has resulted in the removal or remediation of all the aged buildings that contained asbestos and were earthquake prone.
