Types of Apprenticeships

KiwiRail offers seven apprenticeship programmes. Details of these programmes are outlined below.

GENERAL ENGINEERS

General Engineers have good broad skills and knowledge of welding, fabrication, machining, fitting, hydraulics and pneumatics. Their work includes fitting and assembly work on rolling stock including locomotives passenger carriages and wagons and all their component service and repair work, fabrication of metals and building hydraulic and pneumatic systems.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (General Engineering) Level 4

Duration: 3 – 4 years

LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERS

Locomotive Engineers drive both freight and passenger trains for KiwiRail. They are responsible for those trains by using good train driving techniques and ensuring the safety of their passengers and freight wile on the mainline throughout NZ. They are certified to check their trains if necessary and responsible for the crew that support them.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Rail Operations (Train Driver) Level 4

Duration: 2 years

TRACTION LINE MECHANICS

Traction Line Mechanics carry out vital preventative and corrective maintenance on high voltage overhead traction systems on the rail network. They trace and repair faults, install and reinstate overhead equipment as required.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Traction Line) Level 4

Duration: 2 years

SIGNALS TECHNICIANS

Signal Technicians are registered electricians who assemble, install, test, and maintain railways signals equipment. They install and maintain signal lighting systems, train detection equipment, relays, switches, level crossing alarms, computer-based interlocking, and repair faults across the rail network.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Engineering Level 4

Duration: 3 – 4 years

MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS

Maintenance Engineers work on the Interislander ships that run between Wellington and Picton, they also spend time on land-based workshops and are responsible for making sure the ships run smoothly. Work can include overhaul and heavy maintenance of the ships’ engine and engine room equipment.  They also work on auxiliary equipment such as purifiers, shaft generators and gear boxes.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Maintenance Engineering (Maintenance Engineering) Level 4

Duration: 3 – 4 years

TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIANS

Telecommunications Technician are registered as an Electrical Serviceperson Technician who have technical knowledge of computer network engineering and networking infrastructure principles. They install, maintain, diagnose, and repair cabling, electronic communication equipment, and devices for wireless systems.  They also work on wireless networking, wireless telemetry, control applications and radio systems.  
 

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Customer Premises Systems (Wireless Systems) Level 4

Duration: 2.5 3 years

STRUCTURES MAINTAINERS

Structures Maintainers carry out maintenance, repairs and renewals of all railway structures such as bridges, retaining walls, light towers, platforms, culverts, depot maintenance, turntables, drainage systems and the installation of crack monitoring equipment in tunnels.


Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry Level 4

Duration: 3 – 4 years
