He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role

 

As Environmental Lead – North Island, you’ll take the lead on environmental compliance and risk management across KiwiRail’s operations in Te Ika-a-Māui. You'll partner with teams across the business to promote environmental best practice, implement our Environmental Management System, and support continuous improvement in environmental management across all KiwiRail’s operations and projects.

This is a hands-on, influential role that blends leadership, strategy, and on-the-ground action. You'll work with everyone from project teams to external stakeholders—ensuring we stay aligned with legislation, respect our natural and cultural heritage, and continue to innovate for the future.

 

You’ll also lead and develop a small team of Environmental Advisors, supporting their growth and ensuring high standards of service and delivery.

 

Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring

 

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Over 10 years’ experience in environmental management with a strong understanding of practical work site management
  • Strong understanding of Aotearoa’s environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks
  • Proven ability to work with council compliance teams and regulatory bodies
  • Experience engaging with mana whenua and integrating cultural values into environmental practice
  • A proactive, collaborative approach to identifying and managing risk
  • Strong leadership skills, including mentoring and team development
  • The ability to communicate clearly and build relationships across technical and operational teams
  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Resource Management, or similar

 

You'll also need:

  • A current NZ Driver’s Licence
  • Willingness to travel across the North Island
  • To pass a pre-employment medical and drug screen
