KiwiRail is undergoing significant transformation to modernise and grow our rail and ferry services across Aotearoa. As our Manager, Media & External Communications, you’ll lead how we show up externally — shaping public perception, strengthening our reputation, and ensuring clear, consistent storytelling across all channels.  Reporting to the GM Stakeholder Engagement & Communications, you will lead a high-performing team and deliver strategic, insight-led communications that support KiwiRail’s priorities. You’ll operate in a dynamic, high-profile environment, providing trusted advice to senior leaders and ensuring we respond effectively to both opportunities and issues.

What you’ll be doing:

• Leading the development and delivery of KiwiRail’s media and external communications strategy
• Managing media, digital, and social channels to deliver compelling, multi-channel storytelling
• Providing strategic advice on reputational risk, issues management, and crisis communications
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with media and key external stakeholders
• Leading and developing a high-performing communications team with a focus on continuous improvement
• Ensuring communications are insight-led, audience-focused, and aligned to organisational priorities
• Collaborating across KiwiRail to ensure consistency, authenticity, and impact in messaging

• Extensive senior-level experience in media, communications, or external relations
• Proven experience managing media relations and crisis communications
• Strong understanding of digital channels, content, and integrated communications
• Experience leading teams and delivering through others in complex environments
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with sound judgement under pressure
• A collaborative, adaptable approach with high professional standards and integrity
