He whakamārama mo te tūranga mahi | About the role: 

As a Platform Engineer, you will be at the forefront of KiwiRail’s transformation journey, supporting and developing cutting-edge platform infrastructure. Your expertise will ensure that our most critical infrastructure is resilient, secure, compliant, and delivers seamless service. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Lead and champion platform technologies including VMware ESX, Pure Storage, Cisco switches and routers, Citrix NetScaler, and Check and FortiGate firewalls
  • Building and maintaining server, network, storage and service environments, ensuring high availability and security
  • Support and development of Operational Technology infrastructure environment to ensure services are delivered to business needs and meet security and compliance requirements
  • Troubleshooting issues proactively to prevent incidents
  • Automating service delivery for efficiency and scalability 
  • Managing disaster recovery plans and ensuring they meet business expectations
  • Help integrate and align software development, testing, and operational activities while considering the ICT environment, design practices, cost, and security compliance
  • Providing 24/7 support for critical infrastructure alongside a collaborative team, including availability for after-hours on-call duties
  • Driving innovation and improvement across our platform environments

We’re looking for someone with a passion for technology, collaboration, and continuous improvement: 

Essential skills and qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years’ experience with VMware ESX, HyperV, Cisco switches, Pure Storage, and FortiGate firewalls
  • Proven expertise in infrastructure and network services in enterprise settings 
  • Strong scripting and automation skills 
  • A tertiary qualification in computer science or related field 
  • Certifications like VMWare VCSA, Cisco CCNA, Checkpoint CCSA, MCSA, ITIL

 

Desirable qualities: 

  • Proficiency in managing and supporting platform technologies such as VMWare ESX, PureStorage, Cisco switches and routers, Fortigate, and Checkpoint firewall
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of business and technical stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and alignment of software development, testing, and operational activities 
  • Capability to troubleshoot complex issues, proactively report and remediate problems before they escalate into incidents

  • A team player with a Can-Do Attitude
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
