As a Senior Data Engineer, you will help shape and deliver KiwiRail’s enterprise data platform.
You will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that transform raw data into reliable, well-structured information that supports analytics and business decision making.
Working within the Data Engineering team, you will develop data ingestion and transformation pipelines while acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data engineering tools and best practices.
You will work closely with analysts, data scientists, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver trusted data solutions that support operational and strategic outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building scalable data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and modelling
- Developing and optimising workflows using Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, and Microsoft Fabric
- Implementing reusable frameworks and automation to improve efficiency and reliability
- Monitoring data pipelines and troubleshooting performance or data quality issues
- Implementing data validation, quality checks, and monitoring mechanisms
- Supporting architecture decisions and maintaining engineering standards
- Mentoring engineers and contributing to best practices across the team
Ngā pūkenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring:
- Strong experience in data engineering or similar technical roles
- Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Fabric, or Databricks
- Strong SQL and PySpark skills for data transformation and optimisation
- Experience building data ingestion and transformation pipelines
- Knowledge of data modelling approaches (dimensional, relational, lakehouse, or warehouse)
- Understanding of data quality, monitoring, and governance practices
- Experience working in agile, cross-functional teams
- Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions
