As a Senior Database Administrator, you will play a key role in ensuring KiwiRail’s database platforms remain secure, reliable, and high performing.
You will design, manage, and optimize enterprise database environments that support operational systems, analytics platforms, and strategic initiatives across the organization.
Working within the Database Services team, you will manage SQL Server, IBM DB2, and cloud-based database platforms while also acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for database technologies and best practice.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing enterprise SQL Server, IBM DB2, and cloud database environments
- Ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability of critical systems
- Performing database maintenance including patching, indexing, monitoring, and optimisation
- Managing backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes
- Monitoring performance and resolving complex issues through tuning and optimisation
- Implementing database security controls including access management and auditing
- Supporting projects with database design, implementation, and technical guidance
- Responding to incidents and providing root cause analysis to minimise disruption

- Strong experience in enterprise database administration
- Expertise with SQL Server and IBM DB2 environments
- Experience with performance tuning, query optimisation, and index management
- Knowledge of high availability, backup, and disaster recovery solutions
- Understanding of database security, monitoring, and compliance practices
- Familiarity with Azure SQL or other cloud database platforms is desirable
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
