Position Description

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role: 

As a Supply Planner, you will play a critical role in how KiwiRail delivers safe, reliable, and efficient freight services across the network. 

You’ll be responsible for creating medium- to long-term supply plans that balance customer demand with network capacity, fleet availability, terminal capability, and operational constraints. Your insights will directly inform better decision-making and drive improved performance across the rail freight supply chain. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Translating monthly demand forecasts into practical, aggregated supply plans across a 36‑month horizon 
  • Aligning supply plans with the Integrated Business Planning (IBP) cycle to ensure plans are realistic and achievable 
  • Assessing capacity across locomotives, wagons, terminals, maintenance, and network operations 
  • Modelling scenarios and evaluating risks to strengthen resilience and service reliability 
  • Identifying constraints, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities across the supply chain 
  • Producing reports and dashboards on supply plans, utilisation, and planning accuracy 
  • Providing clear insights and recommendations to operational teams 
  • Working closely with Commercial, Demand Planning, Fleet, Asset Management, and Operations teams 

 

This role is well suited to someone who can think strategically while remaining connected daytoday operational realities and who is comfortable making decisions in a dynamic environment.

You’ll be a capable and pragmatic planner who enjoys solving complex problems and working collaboratively to deliver practical outcomes. 

You will bring: 

  • Experience in supply planning, logistics, production planning, or operational planning within complex environments 
  • Strong analytical skills, with confidence using planning tools, data modelling, and scenario analysis to support decision‑making 
  • The ability to simplify complex capacity and operational challenges into clear, actionable plans 
  • Well-developed stakeholder management skills, with a proven ability to influence and build strong relationships across commercial, operational, and technical teams 
  • A systems‑thinking approach, with a focus on continuous improvement and long‑term resilience 
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • High attention to detail while maintaining an end‑to‑end, strategic perspective 
  • A strong commitment to safety, service excellence, and operational reliability 

Ideally, you will also have: 

  • Experience within rail, transport, logistics, or other asset‑intensive industries 
  • Exposure to fleet planning, network capacity management, or maintenance planning 
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in supply chain, logistics, analytics, engineering, or equivalent practical experience 
  • Industry‑recognised certifications relevant to planning or supply chain disciplines
