As a Technical Lead within the Infrastructure Services, you will provide technical leadership across KiwiRail’s core infrastructure platforms.
You will design, deliver, and support secure, reliable, and scalable systems that enable critical operations across the organisation. The role leads the technical stream across projects while also supporting business-as-usual infrastructure services.
Working closely with Architecture, Cybersecurity, Applications, vendors, and operational teams, you will ensure solutions align with KiwiRail’s ICT strategy and operational needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the technical delivery of infrastructure initiatives across projects and operational services
- Reviewing solution designs to ensure systems are secure, resilient, and cost-effective
- Removing technical roadblocks and guiding teams through complex infrastructure challenges
- Supporting infrastructure through the full lifecycle — design, build, testing, implementation, and operational handover
- Championing best practice across automation, monitoring, cybersecurity, and platform lifecycle management
- Embedding within project teams where needed to ensure successful delivery and transition to BAU support
This role combines hands-on engineering with strategic technical leadership, supporting a strong One KiwiRail team approach.

Experience and technical expertise
- 7–10 years’ experience in enterprise ICT infrastructure or platform engineering roles
- Hands-on experience managing enterprise platforms including VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory / Entra ID, and core services such as DNS, DHCP, and NPS
- Experience with Citrix NetScaler / ADC, including content switching, rewrite and transform policies, GSLB, and Gateway
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and/or Linux operating systems, including configuration, patching, performance tuning, and lifecycle management
- Familiarity with System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Salt, or System Center Orchestrator is advantageous
- Proven experience leading technical delivery across infrastructure projects
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure and hybrid cloud environments
- Understanding of enterprise networking concepts including the OSI model, routing, and firewalls
- Knowledge of enterprise compute and storage platforms, including physical servers and data centre infrastructure
- Experience delivering infrastructure across the full lifecycle — design, build, testing, implementation, and transition to BAU support
- Experience with scripting and automation to improve efficiency and reliability
- Relevant tertiary qualification and/or ITIL or vendor certifications
