He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Trainee Traction Line Mechanic, you'll be part of the team responsible for maintaining and restoring the overhead traction systems that power our electric trains. This is a hands-on role where you'll work outdoors, develop practical electrical and mechanical skills, and contribute to keeping Auckland's rail network operating safely and reliably.
As part of KiwiRail's Traction Apprenticeship Programme, you'll receive structured on-the-job training, attend KiwiRail courses, and work towards achieving the New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply (Traction Line) Level 4.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work, problem solving, teamwork, and working in an outdoor environment.
Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead traction equipment
- Safely operate tools, plant and testing equipment
- Support fault finding and restoration activities across the network
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and training progress
- Work collaboratively with experienced Traction Line Mechanics and supervisors
- Champion KiwiRail's commitment to Health, Safety and Wellbeing
- Contribute to our Zero Harm culture by following safety procedures and best practices
Ngā pūmanawa ka kawea mai e koe | What you'll bring
- NCEA Level 1 or equivalent qualification
- Current full New Zealand Class 1 Driver Licence
- A willingness to complete training and gain EWRB registration (or already hold registration)
- Interest in electrical, mechanical or infrastructure work
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Good communication skills and a team-focused approach
- Motivation to learn new skills and take on practical challenges
- Physical fitness and confidence working outdoors, at heights and in varying weather conditions
