He whakamārama mo te tūranga mahi | About the role:
As a Track Ganger, you’ll lead a team responsible for maintaining, repairing, and renewing railway tracks to ensure safe and efficient operations. You'll oversee daily work priorities, allocate tasks, and ensure all work complies with KiwiRail’s quality, safety, and engineering standards. Your role will involve hands-on work, inspections, reporting, and fostering a culture of safety and teamwork within your crew.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a drainage maintenance team to deliver both planned and reactive maintenance activities.
- Ensuring materials and resources are available for the completion of works.
- Conducting infrastructure inspections and addressing any safety concerns promptly.
- Supervising and carrying out welding tasks (if qualified) to support track maintenance.
- Driving a strong safety culture, leading toolbox meetings, and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, maintaining a professional approach at all times.

We’re looking for a motivated leader with:
Essential:
- Proven experience in planning and leading a team within track maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of rail infrastructure codes and standards.
- Commitment to health and safety with a proactive approach.
- Ability to resolve conflicts and coach team members effectively.
- A full, clean Class 2 (HT) driver’s licence.
- Willingness to travel and stay away overnight in different shift patterns.
Desirable:
- Completion of relevant track maintenance training up to Senior Track Maintainer level.
- NCEA Level 1 in Maths and English (or equivalent).
- Computer literacy to manage work orders and documentation.
