Great Journeys New Zealand (GJNZ) operate some of New Zealand’s most iconic Tourism experiences and Interregional commuter trains – The TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific, Northern Explorer, Capital Connections and Te Huia services. Over recent years we have been embarking on transformational change regarding how we offer unique experiences to domestic and international visitors. Originating from scenic train travel, we now offer Scenic Day Trips, Short Breaks & fully guided multi-day tours.

We have an exciting opportunity for Customer Host’s on a part-time, 6+month fixed term contract basis, located in Christchurch commencing 18 August 2025. The contract end date will be 26 April 2026 to ensure we can provide the best customer experience during our busy season.
The Customer Host will ensure that all our passengers enjoy an outstanding experience while travelling on our services. You will be responsible for delivering a first-rate food and beverage service and provide a prompt and professional service to our passengers at all times.
Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What (skills) you will bring:
- NCEA level 3 or equivalent
- Experience working in a hospitality or customer service environment
- Ability to gain and maintain certifications in First Aid, Tunnel & Gas Awareness, Emergency procedures, Food & Hygiene and liquor license
- Be in good health and able to pass the company’s medical standards
- Strong ability to communicate confidently and enjoy interacting with our passengers
- Good level of physical fitness as this role required long days working, standing on a moving train and lifting loads up to 20kg
- You will have a numeric acumen and be able to accurately handle cash and conduct stock takes
- A can-do attitude and willingness to go the extra mile

- Provide quality customer services aboard
- Proactively engage with every customer, building rapport and identifying their unique needs
- Carry out cleaning duties and ensure that the customer areas are kept to a high standard
- Assist with luggage handling
- Ensure all food safety requirements are procedures are consistently applied
- Provide support to team members as required and instructed by Managers on a day-to-day basis
