As a Trainee Track Machine Operator, you will join our Infrastructure Operations team and help maintain the rail network that connects the country.

 

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:

Based in Christchurch, this role involves continuous travel across the rail network on the South Island. You will work as part of a Track Machine Gang, learning how to safely operate and maintain specialised track machines that help keep our railway running smoothly.

This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same. You will work outdoors, learn practical skills, and contribute to maintaining safe and reliable rail infrastructure.

In this role, you will:

  • Learn to operate track machines safely and efficiently under supervision
  • Support the servicing and repair of track machines alongside experienced team members
  • Assist with track maintenance work while meeting KiwiRail quality, safety, and engineering standards
  • Operate hi-rail vehicles on track as part of daily operations
  • Contribute to toolbox meetings and team decisions
  • Complete operational documents and maintain clear work records
  • Travel and stay away from home for extended periods when required, working a ten day on and four day off roster.

We are looking for someone who enjoys practical work, values teamwork, and is ready to learn.

You will bring:

  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Experience in labouring, physical work, or hands-on environments
  • A strong commitment to health and safety
  • A willingness to learn and complete on-the-job training
  • The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Flexibility to travel and stay away overnight for extended periods
  • Availability to attend callouts when required
  • Strong communication skills and a professional approach when working with others
  • NCEA Level 1 Maths and English, or equivalent

It would be an advantage if you also have:

  • Experience or knowledge of rail track geometry
  • A current, clean Class 2 driver licence
  • Experience operating machinery or track machines
  • Computer literacy
  • ITD and Level C certification
  • Previous experience servicing machinery or heavy equipment
