He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role

 As a Trainee Structures Worker, you’ll learn how to maintain and repair the structures that keep our rail network strong – including bridges, culverts, and other essential assets. Working alongside experienced maintainers, you’ll receive On the Job Training and gain skills in safe work practices, using tools and equipment, and documenting your work.

 

This is a practical, outdoors role where no two days are the same. You’ll contribute to team toolbox meetings, support safe work practices, and help ensure KiwiRail continues to deliver safe, reliable services across the country.

We’re looking for someone who is:

 

  • A team player with a willingness to learn

 

  • Comfortable with physical, hands-on work outdoors in all weather

 

  • Safety-focused, with a commitment to keeping yourself and others safe

 

  • Flexible to travel, stay away overnight, and work night shifts and callouts when required

 

  • Able to work at heights with confidence

 

Essential:

 

  • NCEA Level 1 Maths and English (or equivalent)

 

  • Current, clean Class 1 driver’s licence

 

Desirable:

 

  • Experience in carpentry, construction, or general labouring

 

  • Previous rail or infrastructure experience

 

  • A Class 2 driver’s licence
