He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Senior Track Engineer in our Engineering team, you’ll be at the forefront of the continuous improvement of Aotearoa’s track management. Your expertise will support the safe construction, inspection, maintenance, and renewal of track infrastructure across the Aotearoa New Zealand.
You’ll provide technical leadership across advancements in track asset strategy, predictive and preventative maintenance, and incident response. In addition to supporting the development of technical documentation, learning and development and product approvals, you will support the development of junior engineers and collaborate closely with the delivery and engineering teams. This role is key to ensuring our track assets meet the increasing demands of passenger and freight services, helping KiwiRail deliver high-performing and resilient rail infrastructure.

We’re looking for a trusted engineering professional who is passionate about infrastructure and driven to deliver results.
You’ll need:
- A tertiary qualification in mechanical or civil engineering, aligned with the Washington or Sydney Accord, working towards Professional recognition.
- Knowledge of the management and delivery of railway infrastructure predictive maintenance, particularly visual inspections, track geometry recording and rail testing.
- Knowledge of the management and delivery of railway preventative maintenance, particularly geometry correction (manual and tamping), rail defect removal and grinding.
- Experience in the delivery of continuous improvement activities, particularly changes to standard processes, type approved products and learning and development or staff.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- A collaborative approach to continuous improvement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information and advice to a range of audiences
- The ability to mentor and support junior engineers, both within the same team and teams throughout Aotearoa New Zealand
- Familiarity with asset management practices and safety standards
- Asset management knowledge and relevant certifications (e.g., IAM, Apōpō, AMC, IPWEA) are advantageous.
