Position Description  

   

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role: 

KiwiRail is seeking an Operational Competency & Compliance Engineer to join our Rolling Stock Asset Integrity team. This role is ideal for a rail professional who is passionate about safety, coaching others, and driving operational excellence. 

You'll support teams across New Zealand by ensuring rail operations are carried out safely, consistently, and in line with KiwiRail's Safety Case, Rules and Procedures. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Conduct operational audits, competency assessments, and compliance reviews 
  • Coach and support frontline teams to build capability and confidence 
  • Assist with operational incident investigations and corrective actions 
  • Monitor competency systems and recommend continuous improvements 
  • Promote Zero Harm and drive positive safety behaviours 
  • Partner with leaders to maintain compliance with operational standards and regulatory requirements 
  • Travel nationally to support sites and share best practice 

 

Ngā pūkenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring: 

You will bring: 

  • 5+ years' experience in rail operations 
  • Strong knowledge of rail safety requirements and operating practices 
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, auditing, or competency assessment 
  • Strong investigation, problem-solving, and reporting skills 
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities 
  • A current Full New Zealand Driver Licence 
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout New Zealand 

Desirable: 

  • Assessor certification (or working towards it) 
  • Adult education/training qualification or equivalent experience 
  • Previous Investigation and/or Auditor training or experience
