He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Telecommunications Technician, you’ll support the operation and maintenance of our communications systems and cable networks. Working under supervision, you’ll gain hands-on experience with radio communication systems, fibre and copper cabling, train control equipment, and transmission systems.
You’ll:
- Carry out operational tasks on communications equipment and cable networks.
- Assist with fault finding and testing of radio systems.
- Perform manual work, including safe use of tools and plant.
- Accurately document and record work.
- Take part in training, toolbox meetings, and team decision-making.
This role is based at a local depot, with some travel required. You’ll often be working outdoors and at times staying away overnight.

We’re looking for someone who is safety-focused, practical, and keen to learn. You will bring:
- Computer literacy and strong communication skills.
- A current, clean Class 1 driver’s licence.
- The ability to work at heights and outdoors in all weather.
- Flexibility to travel and stay away overnight when required.
- A commitment to health and safety.
- Willingness to complete induction and on-the-job training tasks.
It will also help if you have:
- Experience in telecommunications cabling and installation.
- RF and networking experience.
- NCT Level 3 certification and EST A & B registration.
- Familiarity with rail infrastructure standards or past rail industry experience.
- 4WD training or the ability to operate vehicles in remote locations.
