He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:
We’re seeking experienced Traction Line Mechanics to join our Traction team, maintaining and restoring the overhead traction systems that power our electric rail network. This is a hands‑on, safety‑critical role where you’ll apply your technical expertise working on live rail infrastructure, often outdoors and at height. You’ll play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance and safety of our network while working alongside skilled professionals who take pride in high‑quality workmanship.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Maintain, repair and restore overhead traction equipment across the rail network.
- Carry out network isolations and respond to traction emergencies.
- Safely operate traction testing equipment, tools, plant and EWPs in a live electrical environment.
- Work outdoors and at height as a core part of the role.
- Complete accurate work records and documentation to required standards.
- Actively contribute to team planning and toolbox meetings.
- Demonstrate strong safety leadership and comply with all rail safety requirements, supporting KiwiRail’s Zero Harm commitment.

- Current EWRB registration essential as traction line mechanic.
- Proven experience maintaining, installing and repairing Overhead Traction (OLE) systems within a rail or similar electrified environment.
- Strong working knowledge of traction equipment including overhead wiring, poles, insulators and isolators.
- Experience using traction test and measuring equipment, hand and power tools, and traction plant safely.
- A strong commitment to Zero Harm, with sound knowledge of rail safety systems, operating rules and statutory requirements.
- The ability to complete safety observations, documentation and work records accurately.
- A team‑focused mindset, with confidence contributing to toolbox meetings and day‑to‑day operational decisions.
