He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Trainee Signals Maintainer, you’ll play a key part in maintaining and repairing the systems that control the safe movement of our trains and level crossings. You’ll be working hands-on to install, test, and inspect mechanical and electrical signalling equipment across the network. This is a physical, practical role where no two days are the same, and you'll receive full on-the-job training and mentoring to support your development. Safety is at the heart of what we do – and you’ll be a leader in making sure KiwiRail’s safety standards are upheld at every turn.

We're looking for people who are curious, safety-focused, and keen to learn. The ideal candidate will bring:
• A willingness to learn and work outdoors in varied conditions
• Physical fitness to undertake hands-on maintenance tasks
• A strong focus on safety and attention to detail
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• A full Class 1 driver’s licence (essential)
• NCEA Level 2 in Maths, English, and Science or equivalent
It’s a bonus if you also have:
• A current First Aid and CPR certificate
• Class 2 licence (or willingness to obtain)
You don’t need prior signalling experience – we’ll provide all the training you need.
