Position Description  

 

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:  

As a Trainee Signals Maintainer, you’ll develop the skills required to inspect, maintain, test, and repair the signalling systems that keep trains operating safely across our network. 

Working alongside experienced Signals Maintainers and Field Engineers, you’ll receive structured training and hands-on experience while building specialised technical expertise. You’ll play a key role in supporting the upkeep of signalling equipment, including track circuits, points machines, level crossings, and other critical rail infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities 

In this role, you will: 

  • Assist with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of signalling systems and equipment 
  • Learn to read and interpret technical drawings and signalling diagrams 
  • Support the testing and calibration of signalling systems under supervision 
  • Identify and report faults or equipment issues 
  • Install and connect signalling equipment in line with approved standards and procedures 
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of work completed 
  • Complete on-the-job training and formal technical courses 
  • Work in accordance with KiwiRail’s safety, quality, and engineering standards at all times 

Please note that some travel and overnight stays may be required 

 

Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring: 

We’re seeking motivated, safety-focused individuals who enjoy hands-on work and are eager to learn a specialist trade. 

You will bring: 

  • Experience working effectively within a team 
  • Practical experience in labouring, construction, manufacturing, trades, or similar hands-on environments 
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing 
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to learn 
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures 
  • A reliable, proactive approach to your work 
  • NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent) 
  • A current Full Class 1 Driver Licence 

Desirable (but not essential): 

  • Previous experience in the rail industry 
  • Electrical experience or registration as a New Zealand Electrician 
  • A Full Class 2 Driver Licence 
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification 

 

No prior signalling experience is required — we’ll provide all the training and support you need to succeed
