As a Station Attendant, you will play an important part in keeping Palmerston North Railway Station welcoming, clean, and ready for every KiwiRail passenger train service.

 

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:

Based in Palmerston North, you will help ensure the station is clean, secure, and ready for passengers travelling on the KiwiRail passenger services.

You will open the station before scheduled departures, prepare passenger luggage for travel, and support customers throughout their journey. You will also help maintain a clean and welcoming environment by keeping passenger areas tidy and reporting maintenance needs.

This role suits someone who enjoys working independently, takes pride in presentation, and values good customer service.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Opening and securing the station in line with train schedules
  • Cleaning passenger areas, waiting rooms, toilets, windows, and station grounds
  • Weighing, labelling, and assisting with passenger luggage
  • Keeping customers informed about service updates and delays
  • Reporting maintenance issues and contractor service concerns
  • Supporting a safe environment by following KiwiRail health and safety practices

Health and safety is an important part of how KiwiRail operates. You will be expected to lead by example and ‘walk the safety talk’.

We are looking for someone who is reliable, customer-focused, and takes pride in doing a job well.

You will bring:

  • Experience working with customers and responding to public enquiries
  • Strong verbal communication skills and confidence speaking with customers
  • A reliable approach and the ability to work independently
  • A strong focus on safety and attention to detail
  • Physical fitness and the ability to lift luggage up to 25kg unaided
  • A positive attitude and willingness to support the wider team

It would also be helpful if you have:

  • An interest in KiwiRail’s passenger services
  • Some maintenance knowledge and confidence identifying issues that need escalation
