He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Trainee Signals Technician, you’ll support the safe and effective operation of our rail signalling systems. You’ll assist with the maintenance, installation, and repair of signals and components that control train movements across our network.
Under full supervision, you’ll learn to:
- Read and work from technical diagrams and layout drawings
- Install and maintain signal masts, relays, and control panels
- Use testing equipment to diagnose faults in electrical and mechanical systems
- Follow set procedures for cabling and connections
- Document your work accurately and safely
This is a practical, hands-on role where safety comes first. You’ll work outdoors, sometimes away from your home depot, and develop your skills through structured on-the-job training and technical courses.

We’re looking for team players who are reliable, eager to learn, and committed to safety.
Essential:
- EWRB electrical registration in NZ
- NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English and Science (or equivalent)
- A full Class 1 driver’s licence
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to work outdoors
- Basic experience in manual or labouring work
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Desirable (but not required):
- Class 2 driver’s licence
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Prior rail or electrical experience
You’ll also need to meet the physical and safety requirements of the role and be ready to complete structured training over a 1–3 year period.
