Position Description

 

He whakamārama mo te tūranga mahi | About the role:

As a Trainee Track Worker, you will join a maintenance team responsible for keeping our rail infrastructure safe and operational. Working under the guidance of a Track Ganger or Senior Track Maintainer, you will support track maintenance, repairs, and renewals across the network.

This role combines practical, hands-on work with structured learning. You will receive on-the-job training from experienced team members and attend classroom training to build your knowledge and skills.

Your day-to-day work may include:

  • Assisting with track maintenance, repairs, and renewal work under supervision
  • Learning to safely use hand tools and minor plant equipment
  • Supporting the team with documentation and reporting tasks
  • Participating in toolbox meetings and team discussions
  • Working outdoors in a variety of environments and conditions

Safety is central to everything we do. You will play an active role in supporting KiwiRail’s Zero Harm approach — speaking up about safety, identifying hazards, and helping keep your team safe.

We are looking for people who enjoy practical work and want to build a long-term career in rail.

You will bring:

  • A strong commitment to safety and following procedures
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills
  • The ability to work well as part of a team
  • Physical fitness and enjoyment of hands-on outdoor work
  • The ability to stay focused and pay attention to detail
  • A Class1 and ideally a 2 driver’s licence (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Flexibility to work shifts, travel, and stay away overnight when required
  • It would also be helpful if you have:
  • NCEA Level 1 in Maths and English, or equivalent
  • An interest in developing a career in rail infrastructure
