Position Description  

 

Join a crew that keeps Aotearoa moving. As a Trainee Structures Worker, you’ll help maintain and repair rail structures across the North Island—working outdoors, learning on the job, and developing a long-term career in rail.

 

He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role: 

As part of our Network Services team, you’ll join a dedicated maintenance crew responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of KiwiRail’s structures. Working alongside an experienced Leading Structures Maintainer, you’ll support maintenance, repairs, and renewals, using approved methods and building your capabilities every day.

Safety is central to how we operate. You’ll be expected to model safe practices and uphold our Zero Harm values at all times.

This role is based at the Taumarunui depot and involves travel across the network, including some overnight stays. You’ll work outdoors in all weather and be part of a supportive team that values learning and continuous improvement.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the maintenance, repair, and renewal of rail structures
  • Work safely and champion our Zero Harm approach
  • Travel across the network, including occasional overnight stays
  • Learn from experienced maintainers and build your skills daily

 

Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring: 

  • Strong commitment to safety
  • Current Class 1 licence (full preferred)
  • Ability to work outdoors at heights in all conditions
  • Positive, team-focused attitude and willingness to learn
  • NCEA Level 1 Maths & English (or equivalent)

Desirable:

  • Labouring or construction experience, or a Class 2 licence
