He whakamārama mo te tūranga mahi | About the role: 

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll ensure KiwiRail’s rolling stock stays on track. This is a hands-on role where you’ll diagnose faults, perform repairs, and carry out maintenance. Your work will improve operational reliability and safety, directly contributing to the smooth running of New Zealand’s rail network. 

Your responsibilities include: 

  • Conducting scheduled maintenance, fault-finding, and repairs on rolling stock 

  • Supporting operators in safe equipment use and performing routine inspections 

  • Collaborating with your team to deliver work on time and to high-quality standards 

  • Maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to safety policies 

  • Assisting with shunting, piloting, and marshalling duties when needed 

  • Your adaptability and problem-solving skills will help us navigate technical challenges and respond to unplanned maintenance tasks

 

Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What (skills) you will bring:  

We’re looking for someone with: 

  • A Trade Certificate Level 4 or 5 (or equivalent) in mechanical fitting, diesel mechanics, or a related field 

  • Experience in heavy industry, automotive, or locomotive engineering 

  • Strong mechanical diagnostic and repair skills, including reading technical drawings 

  • A commitment to safety and teamwork, with great communication skills 

  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities and deliver quality results under pressure 

 

It’s great if you also have: 

  • Certification in welding (AS/NZS 2980 or ISO 9606.1) or crane operation 

  • Knowledge of SAP maintenance systems 

  • Full Class 1 New Zealand driver’s licence with F endorsement 

  • Competent to operate an overhead gantry crane and hold Unit Standard 30072 and 3800
