He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:  

Based at our Waltham depot in Christchurch, you’ll work hands-on with our locomotive fleet, ensuring they’re safe, reliable, and ready for action.  

Whether it's routine maintenance or responding to the unexpected, you’ll be a key part of keeping our network on track.  

This is a permanent, full-time role on a 24/7 rotating roster including penal rates! 

In this role, you will:  

  • Carry out scheduled maintenance and mechanical repairs on locomotives  

  • Identify and diagnose faults, then work collaboratively to resolve them  

  • Perform safety checks and assist operators with equipment  

  • Maintain clear service records and follow all safety procedures  

  • Support yard operations, including operation of rail vehicles  

 

Starting hourly rate: $36.38 - $42.20, based on your qualifications and experience.

We’re after someone mechanically minded and committed to safety.  

You will bring:  

  • Experience in heavy industry, automotive engineering  

  • A strong focus on safety, problem-solving, and quality outcomes  

  • A team-oriented approach and adaptability to changing priorities  

  • A full Class 1 driver licence  

  • Relevant Trade Qualifications or Certifications  

 

It’s a bonus if you also have:  

  • Diesel or Automotive Mechanic Experienced (Desirable) 

  • Automotive Electrical Experienced (Desirable) 

  • Welding certification (AS/NZS 2980 or ISO 9606.1)  

  • A Level 4-5 NZQA trade certificate in mechanical fitting, or a related field 

  • F endorsement on your NZ driver licence  

  • Gantry crane unit standards (US 30072 and 3800)
