KiwiRail has embarked on one of the most challenging, high profile and unique construction programmes in a generation. We have committed to building two bespoke, greener, rail-enabled ferries, and new sustainably constructed port infrastructure in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and Waitohi Picton by 2025.

We require a Project Engineer with skills in the construction of large and complex marine and heavy civil structures to join us to add technical expertise, and programme knowledge, to these iconic, safe, sustainable terminal build projects. We have two positions, one based in Picton and one in Wellington.

 

As Project Engineer, you will provide the technical expertise needed to successfully plan, initiate, and deliver infrastructure projects and work packages.

Key responsibilities:

 

  • Providing technical leadership across detailed design, build, completion, and handover stages of projects and work packages
  • Contributing to the development of accurate and achievable project schedules and detailed budgets for the work
  • Contributing to the procurement, contract negotiations, and initiation of contracted work required to successfully deliver to project objectives
  • Working with internal stakeholders, engineering services, and consultants to develop fit-for-purpose design solutions that meet operational requirements, technical standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Identifying and securing all permits, approvals, access, materials and inspections required to deliver and complete all project work in line with legislated frameworks, standards and rules
  • Actively managing the quality of all work undertaken across the delivery lifecycle and by KiwiRail and external parties
  • Assisting delivery management in all aspects of financial forecasting and management
  • Contributing to the performance reporting required for all work undertaken
  • Identifying and addressing project risks and issues, escalating and reporting in line with programme control disciplines

 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

 

  • 5+ years’ experience in complex marine and structure infrastructure projects, including piling, seawall, ground improvement, wharf, and bridge construction
  • Experience and ability to undertake constructability reviews of the design work
  • Experience in supervision, management, and reporting of construction activities  
  • Ability to develop detailed project plans and schedule of works for procurement and implementation   

 

As an experienced Project Engineer, you will see the big picture and have the discipline and continually work towards this while dealing with short term distractions as necessary and without compromising attention to detail or accuracy.

 

Importantly, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to obtain buy-in from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
