KiwiRail’s Interislander ferry service has been sailing Te Moana-o-Raukawa between Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and Waitohi Picton for over 60 years, providing an invaluable service to New Zealanders.

We’re looking for someone to join our energetic and innovative team to support communications for our Interislander business unit.  

What you’ll do

Our Senior Communication Advisor will be centre stage working with our operations team keeping our passengers, teams and commercial customers up to speed with what’s going on.  At times, the weather and other unexpected issues can force a change in plans and this role is key to making sure everyone knows exactly what’s going on.

As a pro-active person with loads of initiative, you’ll get to utilise all your experience, creativity and flair in this role.  We’re keen for you to lead, plan and implement how Interislander works with internal and external stakeholders, keeping information flowing and promoting Interislander’s objectives.

The Senior Communications Advisor will:

• Develop and implement communications strategies and work programmes to enhance and preserve the KiwiRail and Interislander brands.
• Be ‘hands on’ in identifying key issues which require communication and developing and delivering opportunities to achieve this.
• Deliver key communications functions, including dealing with media enquiries, dealing with social media, internal communications, production of web content, management of engagement platforms and development of communication assets and collateral.
• Support the Communications team with other tasks as required.
• Share with other team members (on a rotation basis) responsibility for night-time and weekend disruption comms.
• Work at all levels with internal and external teams and individuals, fostering good relationships to promote the smooth delivery of Interislander projects.
• Initiate ideas proactively and find ways to tell stories and create lasting relationships that help to deliver Interislander’s vision.

What you’ll need

You will be an experienced senior communications advisor with proven skillsets in the above areas and an ability to hit the ground running in this complex environment.  It is beneficial if you have knowledge and experience of operating in a public service environment and can see broader implications to issues and opportunities.

Your demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, high standard of oral and written communication skills and knowledge and experience of strategic communications will ensure your success in this role.
