He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:
As a Senior Signals Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping safe and reliable rail operations across Aotearoa. You’ll provide expert guidance on signals infrastructure, lead design and assurance activities, and help our teams plan for long-term asset performance.
You’ll develop and review design solutions, support asset management decisions, and offer specialist advice on upgrades and renewals. Mentoring junior engineers is an important part of the role, along with contributing to KiwiRail’s engineering standards and strategic direction. Your work will strengthen the resilience of our network and support improved customer outcomes.

Essential skills and experience
- Extensive experience in railway signals engineering, ideally 10 years or more.
- Design and review of signalling systems and level crossings.
- Strong understanding of asset management and risk-based planning.
- Ability to produce and review technical documentation and standards.
- Experience with project planning, delivery, and stakeholder engagement.
- Knowledge of train control systems, interlockings, and axle counters.
- A commitment to safety and a collaborative approach to working with others.

- Professional, considerate, and focused on continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Tertiary engineering degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field (Level 7 equivalent and preferably Washington Accord accredited).
- Chartered status or progress toward it is an advantage.
- Equivalent industry experience is also considered.
- A current NZ driver’s licence and ability to travel when required.
